Autumn Lewis, Social Media Strategist

What’s one thing that makes DC Thomson feel different from anywhere else you’ve worked?
There is a genuine sense of community and purpose at DC Thomson. There are so many initiatives across the business focused on development and learning, from our Lunch & Learn’s to structured formal training. People across the business genuinely want to see each other succeed and it helps to create an atmosphere where there’s always space to grow, explore new ideas and stretch into new challenges.

Why do you feel proud to work here?
DC Thomson’s brands are integrated into people’s lives in a meaningful way. Whether through our news, lifestyle, or heritage titles, the content and stories that we create across the business are always focused on delivering meaningful experiences for our audiences. Everything we do centres on connecting with real people and delivering something of value.  I feel privileged and proud to help shape how we connect these stories to our audiences every day.

What’s your favourite part of your role?
My favourite part is leading a team that’s right at the heart of how audiences engage with our journalism. Every day is different, No two days are the same. One day we might be exploring new content formats or testing engagement strategies, the next we’re diving into data or collaborating across departments to respond to a major news story or campaign. I love that blend of creativity and insight. It’s brilliant to see a story take off, knowing we’ve helped it reach people in ways that matter.

How would you describe the people you work with?
Curious, collaborative, and encouraging. There’s a real team spirit across our newsrooms. We value individual strengths and collective success. Everyone in the newsroom brings something different to the table, and we learn a lot from each other. Whether we’re brainstorming ideas, solving problems or celebrating wins, there’s a strong sense of mutual respect and shared ambition.

What helps you feel like you can be yourself at work?
Working within the audience team really fosters being yourself. We collaborate closely, and there’s a genuine sense of trust, respect, and being heard. With a mix of home-working and colleagues across different offices, we even have Friday quizzes that helps to bring us together and help us connect more personally and get to know each other better.

How does DC Thomson support a sense of belonging?
There’s a strong culture of inclusion and openness here. Everyone’s contribution and voice matters, and if you have something to say, you know it will be listened to. Whether you're new to the business or have been here for years, you know that your perspective is valued. Working at DC Thomson there is a culture of learning, listening, and evolving.

Carly Gilchrist, Head of Brand Marketing, Local Communities

What’s one thing that makes DC Thomson feel different from anywhere else you’ve worked?
What makes DC Thomson feel truly different, in my experience, is the legacy and history behind the brands we work with. Telling the brand stories of titles that have literally existed for centuries — like The Courier (over 200 years), The P&J (275 years and counting), and The Scots Magazine (one of the world’s oldest magazines) — carries real weight. It can be daunting, but it’s also incredibly exciting as a marketer. There’s a richness to the storytelling and a responsibility to honour that heritage while helping the brands evolve. What makes it even more special is the passion and knowledge of the teams, many of whom are true custodians of these brands’ histories. No two days are the same, and that constant variety is something I really value.

Why do you feel proud to work here?
I moved to Dundee seven years ago, returning to Scotland after time in Melbourne — where I’m originally from — and before that, a long stretch in Edinburgh. Honestly, I thought relocating to Dundee might mean putting my career on pause. I’d heard of DC Thomson, but I hadn’t realised the scale and impact of the business — not just in Dundee, but across Scotland and the UK. I was amazed that a city the size of Dundee had two local news titles. What I’ve discovered since is a company with deep roots, national reach, and a real commitment to evolving storytelling. I feel incredibly proud to work here and incredibly grateful that Dundee and DC Thomson have given me opportunities that I thought might not happen at this stage of my career.

What’s your favourite part of your role?
I absolutely love working on our news titles. Coming from a background in local government and The Red Cross in Melbourne, I had never worked in media before joining DC Thomson — but nearly six years in, I honestly can’t imagine working anywhere else. At first, I found the pace of news quite intimidating. It’s fast, relentless — but also incredibly exciting (most of the time). What I love most, though — and it might sound like a cliché — is the people. As a marketing team, we collaborate across so many parts of the business: editorial, audience and product. We bring all those perspectives together to tell the brand story, and that cross-team creativity is what makes the work so rewarding.

How would you describe the people you work with?
I think the editorial teams, in particular,  are incredibly committed and proud of what they do day to day. It’s very impressive and motivating to see. When COVID happened, everybody just shifted gear and found a way. And in my opinion, we excelled in what we delivered. It’s been an incredible period of transformation and I think people have really embraced this, which is sometimes hard to do. I was lucky enough to sit down with the journalists at The Courier last year and really unpick why they came to work every day, what it meant and why it mattered. Reflecting, I found the whole process quite emotional, because everybody I spoke to demonstrated such commitment and care for what they were doing. I don’t think many workplaces could compare to that.

What helps you feel like you can be yourself at work?
For me, it’s being surrounded by genuinely good people, all connected by a shared purpose — to make the place we all call home the best it can be. That really came through during the recent brand work for The Courier, and it resonated deeply with me, because this is my home too. Some of the people I work with are also my friends and neighbours — our kids go to school together. It feels like a real community. That sense of belonging, both inside and outside of work, has made it easy to feel like I can be myself with the people that I work with… though I’ll admit, not everyone might be thrilled about that…I know I am the loud Australian on the editorial floor, and I’m still working on my volume control.

How does DC Thomson support a sense of belonging?
The brands that DC Thomson has built over generations are all about fostering a sense of community and belonging, and I think and hope that comes through in the workplace. I have, over the years, witnessed real moments of care and consideration for people in our workplace, and also people who have been here for a long, long time. I always think that is a good sign when you work somewhere. I also see real efforts to be inclusive, have discussions, challenge the status quo and give people tools to do their jobs every day.

Ellen Scott, Digital Editor at Stylist

What’s one thing that makes DC Thomson feel different from anywhere else you’ve worked?
The genuine care for staff! I’ve never worked somewhere that managers and people leaders do so much to check in on their team’s wellbeing and support their development. Also, the open communication and lack of stuffy hierarchical dynamics. It’s so unusual to work at a place where the CEOs and people senior to you are genuinely up for hearing feedback or just having a general chat. It’s really lovely. It feels like absolutely anyone can make suggestions to make the work better. Also, everyone is so lovely. I could go on. I came to Stylist after a long time working in newsrooms where the things that are treated as basic and obvious here weren’t the norm. So even a couple of years into being here, I’m not over the gratitude to be working in a company where I feel respected and valued.

Why do you feel proud to work here?
I’m so proud to work at Stylist because there’s such a big focus on purpose. With everything we do, I know what it’s for: to help women. I’m proud to work somewhere that leaders walk the walk, not just talk the talk, too. It never feels like Stylist is just paying lip service to the issues that matter. We’re not just creating content about the importance of miscarriage care or flexible working; those campaigns are followed through in the workplace – we do a hybrid style of working and recently had a session on how to approach fertility issues in the office. I’m proud to work at a company that’s doing good, both externally and for the people who work here.

What’s your favourite part of your role?
I’ll cheat here and say multiple favourite parts, sorry. Number one: the people. I honestly think all the team are brilliant geniuses and it’s so great that a big part of my job is bouncing around ideas with them and getting to edit their work. Number two: the content. I really love the content Stylist produces. I’ve been a fan of the magazine since it launched and I’m still such a fan – the content across the magazine, the app, the site, our social media, all of it speaks to what I’m feeling, thinking and needing. Three: getting to try things. I really love being able to experiment; I think that’s something really important for keeping me engaged in any role. In other workplaces it can be such a drag to actually put ideas into action. At Stylist we’re encouraged to give it a go (with conscious planning and data to back it up, of course) and see if it works. I launched a new series last month that I love and we’re currently working on a VIP Book Club, an idea that was mentioned off-hand in a meeting and that we’re now making a reality. Exciting!

How would you describe the people you work with?
Brilliant, welcoming, supportive. Also: funny. And wise. Have I mentioned I’m a huge fan of all of them? I genuinely feel so fortunate to get to work with them.

What helps you feel like you can be yourself at work?
It’s a combination of so many things. It’s the true support from my manager and the people I work with. I have depression and OCD, which can be challenging, and have previously had issues with work addiction. I know that I can talk about these things without judgment and can ask for adjustments to enable me to do my work. My manager, Fliss, has been so understanding. It’s also the psychological safety created in all areas of the company. In our meetings, there’s a culture that allows you to pitch an idea that won’t work or is a bit weird and to feel comfortable doing that. That’s how we get to some of our best content that really speaks to our readers. If there weren’t that sense of psychological safety, I never would have written a piece about how I feel like I’ve failed at friendship or suggested we do an entire digital issue dedicated to the things that make us wonder if we’re normal.

Gemma Bibby, Head of Photography

What’s one thing that makes DC Thomson feel different from anywhere else you’ve worked?
How embedded in the local area it is—it’s got a lot of history here, strong community ties, and pretty much everyone around here knows the name.

Why do you feel proud to work here?
Working for a well-established, well-known business that serves the local community - of which I am a part of.

What’s your favourite part of your role?
I have two favourite parts of my role. First is the buzz of big breaking news. When something major happens, like extreme weather during Storm Eowyn, the newsroom comes alive and we in AV work closely with the Live News team. I help coordinate where our photographers go, stay in regular contact to make sure they're safe, and make sure the images get to where they're needed. It’s great to know we’re helping inform the public and sharing the stories of those affected. The second is seeing the finished product of a photo essay I’ve commissioned—beautiful, powerful images that celebrate the people in our community. There’s something really special about bringing those stories to life visually.

How would you describe the people you work with?
I work closely with a team of talented photographers and AV producers who are all incredibly creative and passionate about visual storytelling. The photographers bring a high level of skill and experience, while the AV producers have a great eye for spotting photo opportunities and shaping storytelling through imagery.

What helps you feel like you can be yourself at work?
The diverse mix of people who work here - it’s a really welcoming place. I was a bit worried at first that I'd get grief about being English, but that’s never been an issue. There are people from all over, not just the UK. I also wondered if my dark, ex-military sense of humour would be a bit much, but it turns out journalists aren’t so different!

How does DC Thomson support a sense of belonging?
DC Thomson makes you feel like you belong by promoting an inclusive, respectful, and community-focused culture.

Emily Tsang, Business Development Executive

What’s one thing that makes DC Thomson feel different from anywhere else you’ve worked?

As this is my first career-focused role after working in hospitality during my student years, truthfully, I don’t have a wide range of corporate experiences to compare it to, but what stands out to me at DC Thomson is a family-oriented company. There is a lot of support and proactive guidance in place to accommodate different working patterns, holidays, and overall life balance/well-being. Other great examples that seem really unique are the Growth Days and Birthday Day we get.

Why do you feel proud to work here?

I feel proud because every year (4 years now!) I’ve had the chance to grow and take the next step in my career. I’ve never felt stuck or like I’ve hit a ceiling. It’s a great feeling to look back each year and see real progress and to be able to share that with family and friends.

What’syour favourite part of your role?

Probably the external work; I love meeting new people and learning about their industries.

How would you describe the people you work with?

I guess they're kinda like a river,  very receptive to the landscape around them, always in motion with great blue thinking at the end. There are days they're calm and steady, but other days it's whitewater rapid movements, but it's all perfectly natural and in line with the flow of going forward. 100%  The people I work with are genuinely interesting, there’s never a dull conversation, and there’s always something new to learn or laugh about.

What helps you feel like you can be yourself at work?

Freedom to express yourself.

How does DC Thomson support a sense of belonging?

For me, team days, quiz nights, yoga, or payday treats always hit the spot -they're a great chance to catch up on the little things and get to know new people you don't usually get a chance to mix with.

Teodora Oniga, Principal Engineer

What’s one thing that makes DC Thomson feel different from anywhere else you’ve worked?

The people – people can make or break a workplace, everyone is friendly, helpful and supportive.

Why do you feel proud to work here?

At Findmypast,  it is a very exciting business, creating a genuinely great product for people – we are constantly thinking of ways to build, develop, innovate and help our customers, who are always at the forefront.

What’s your favourite part of your role?

The tech aspect, and the learning – I am an engineer, so I have to keep myself up to date with the latest developments, to stay up to date with new technology – I love that this is a requirement in my role, and it keeps it interesting as things develop so quickly!

How would you describe the people you work with?

I feel like I am always working with people that I can learn from – everyone has something to offer, and we all share the same engineering values, which makes it easy for us all to work together.

What helps you feel like you can be yourself at work?

The culture within the company. The culture that has been fostered in Findmypast is that everyone is encouraged to ask questions, express opinions, and get involved in discussions.  You are never made to feel like you are asking a silly question or are not able to contribute.

How does DC Thomson support a sense of belonging?

In my team we all work remotely, and are encouraged to have regular in person days and team building activities to create a sense of belonging within the team.  Across the company, colleagues are always kept up to date with company strategy and vision, so each of us knows how we fit into it and how our roles help.

Shameem Begg , Head of Promotions & Innovation

What’s one thing that makes DC Thomson feel different from anywhere else you’ve worked?

The growth element. It’s opened up a wealth of opportunity for everyone! In past roles, career progression was generally plodding along a relatively straight road, sometimes with limited opportunity at the end. Following a set direction, with no real say, could get you stuck somewhere you didn’t want to be. Now at DC Thomson we all have the chance to navigate our own path. That’s unusual – and exciting!

Why do you feel proud to work here?

It undoubtedly goes without saying that I’m proud of Puzzler and the part we play within DC Thomson. But beyond that, I’m proud of the work the company as a whole put into community and charity – Viva Engage is a great place to see all the brilliant initiatives going on around the business. Also, the Northwood Charitable Trust shows incredible support for a myriad of causes, and that makes my heart happy. It’s truly something we should all be proud of.

What’s your favourite part of your role?

Collaboration 100%. Brainstorming ideas and bouncing off other people gives me life! It’s not always in scheduled meetings where ideas come about. The magic can happen during random chats with colleagues where we bounce ideas off each other. I have a diverse role and know I’m lucky to have had the opportunity to collaborate with so many across the business. It’s expanded my mind!

How would you describe the people you work with?

I don’t want to sound gushy, but I’d sum them up as caring. Not only does everyone care deeply about what they’re working on, but they also genuinely care about the people they work with. It makes work feel like a place I want to be, rather than have to be.

What helps you feel like you can be yourself at work?

Knowing I’m in a team where people are supportive, open and non-judgmental. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about valuing our differences. People are key to any successful business, and diversity of lived experience not only brings fresh thoughts and ideas, but it also helps strengthen empathy. Can I just add that I’m grateful to all my work buddies who embrace my quirks!

How does DC Thomson support a sense of belonging?

I was motivated to join the DE&I team because I know what it feels like not to belong. I also have a connection to well-being and can say that colleagues in these groups are working really hard behind the scenes on initiatives to help foster that sense of belonging. It’s not a quick fix as there’s no one-size fits all scenario, but we’re moving in the right direction with the support of the People Team and SLT. So, feel free to slide into my DMs if you have any thoughts or ideas that you’d like share on the subject!

Sean Spicer, IT Helpdesk Analyst

What’s the one thing that makes DC Thomson feel different from anywhere else you’ve worked?

One thing that stands out to me is the sense of collaboration and trust across teams. People are encouraged to share ideas, take ownership and support one another, which creates a really positive and productive environment.

Why do you feel proud to work here?

I feel proud to work here because I know the work I do has a real impact across the company. I get to solve meaningful problems with my team and collaborate with other departments to help keep things running smoothly. It’s rewarding to know that my role supports the bigger picture, and I’m constantly learning as I work toward career progression.

What’s your favourite part of your role?

My favourite part of the role is the constant learning — each day presents new challenges, systems, and scenarios to navigate, which keeps the work engaging and supports ongoing skill development. Combined with clear, achievable career paths, I feel like I’m at the start of a meaningful long-term career rather than just another job.

How would you describe the people you work with?

My team strikes a great balance between being professional and personable.  On a personal level, they’re down-to-earth, approachable, and always up for a bit of humour, which makes the workplace feel friendly and relaxed. On a professional level, they’re reliable, supportive, and willing to share their knowledge or lend a hand when needed. That combination creates a positive, collaborative atmosphere where it’s easy to stay motivated and feel part of a strong, connected team.

What helps you feel like you can be yourself at work?

The supportive environment both within the IT department and across the company allows me to be myself at work. There’s a strong sense of trust in my ability to do my job effectively with appropriate training provided when needed. That kind of atmosphere makes it easy to be open, ask questions, and contribute with confidence.

How does DC Thomson support a sense of belonging?

Making sure people feel appreciated for the work they do, both on a company scale and down to the individual.  Recognition is built into the everyday culture — from praise for tackling larger, complex tasks down to a simple thank-you for something small.  There’s also a real effort to include everyone in conversation during meetings, which helps feel like their voice matters.

Floyd March, North West Correspondent

What’s one thing that makes DC Thomson feel different from anywhere else you’ve worked?

The number one thing that feels different is the size of the company and the resource that has been put into high-quality journalism - everyone in the Energy Voice team is an expert in their field, and it creates an environment of learning from each other and togetherness.

Why do you feel proud to work here?

The main thing that makes me proud to be part of the team is the freedom to pursue stories that are both important to the industry but also to the people working in the sectors we talk about.

What’s your favourite part of your role?

Talking to people, holding the government to account and just generally being nosey.

How would you describe the people you work with?

A great group of people with a genuine passion for the topic. Everyone lives and breathes the energy industry and it shows in the reporting.

What helps you feel like you can be yourself at work?

Genuine autonomy to follow a story that we feel is important for our audience to read about.

How does DC Thomson support a sense of belonging?

For me, ownership of a patch which I report on has helped to feel like I am making an impact for the Energy Voice brand.
