Northwood

Making communities better and more supportive places for people to live, work and prosper.

It was originally funded by a Thomson family member who donated his shares in the family business. Since then, the family has continued to support the Trust with successive generations providing leadership and further donations. The current Trustees, all family members, remain committed to upholding the founder’s values and the Trust’s objectives.

What we fund

The Trust provides financial support to help enhance people’s lives through a wide range of charitable organisations. Its main funding themes are:

  • Arts, Heritage & Culture

The Trust aims to fund initiatives that engage, enrich and connect communities through art, creativity and design and support organisations that safeguard and strengthen the rich and diverse heritage and culture where we live.

  • Education

The Trust awards grants to charitable organisations that make a positive contribution to education and research and to initiatives that provide learning and training opportunities to individuals and groups from all ages and backgrounds.

  • Health & Wellbeing

Supporting charities and charitable initiatives that work to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities is a key objective of the Trust. Working in partnership with grant recipients, funding will enhance the work of healthcare and support services to improve the life outcomes of many individuals, families and groups.

  • Poverty, Deprivation & Inequality

The Trust is committed to funding charities and initiatives that work to break the cycle of poverty and hardship that many individuals and families experience. The Trust supports activities that will tackle and address social and economic inequalities.

    The Big House Multibank

The Big House Multibank, based in Lochgelly, Fife, reduces poverty and waste by redistributing surplus goods, that would otherwise go to landfill, to families across Scotland.

Working with national retailers and manufacturers, it supplies essentials through more than 800 trusted referral partners.

One of six UK Multibanks, it operates from Lochgelly with satellite sites in Dundee, Perth and Edinburgh, with plans to expand into Glasgow.

The Northwood Charitable Trust has supported the charity since its 2022 pilot and continues to fund its work.

The Trust also provides a small core grant, helping Hot Chocolate continue to build meaningful, trusted relationships with young people across the city.
